Lorelai feels that shes rightfully upset by her moms reaction to the news only in the context of her mother not knowing about the engagement. So she charges in without ever even considering that maybe she did a shitty thing and not tell her. ... I wouldnt act like Emily, but if I found out that my kid got engaged weeks ago and hasnt told me then id be pretty upset too.

I hate Emily in that scene with Max. There she is, her only daughter, voicing clearly and liudly how she's hurt, and she couldn't even see past her own bitterness and just be a mother. No, she decides to diminish her pain ('You're clearly hysterical'). I think this scene is a very strong representation of what Emily is as a mother. And i''m not a psychologist :) but i think it also shows that she really doesn't care because the very next minute she made the whole situation about herself and made Lorelei feel small and insignificant when she was in her most vulnerable state

I've been questioning for a while now if I myself and neuro divergent, because I've had a few of my autistic friends tell me that they noticed traits I have that make them think I should check just incase (due to circumstances I can't get this diagnosis but I hope to at some point) but one thing I noticed different from me to most autistic people is the display of emotions, I feel that I feel emotions very deeply and I can read other emotions quite well but that apparently not a common trait within autistic/neuro divergent people. Idk this might just be nothing but it gets brought up a lot

What I love about the veil scene when it comes to Lorelai‘s attempt to break the ice, here there’s more substance than with for example Luke. She doesn’t just talk aimlessly she creates an excuse to ask Emily for her opinion signaling I actually do care about what you think. Especially when she says “well since you know me” to Emily. I think that’s why the end of the scene works. After the apology Emily actually signals I understand now that you do care so I will go with it and show you I care too. And after accidentally belittling her daughter she fixes it by suggesting the tiara just as she wore one. She’s actually implying “I didn’t mean to belittle you” and for that conversation puts them on the same pedestal. So to sum up Lorelai shows she cares about what Emily thinks. Emily dismisses the notion. Lorelai apologises proving she means it Emily is convinced and tries to play along to communicate she cares but fails by being condescending Then finally Emily remedies her condescension by putting them both on the same level And Lorelai accepts that

When I watched this show as a teenager, I could not understand why Emily was so mean. Now that I am watching this as an adult, I can see both sides and completely understand why Emily was hurt about not knowing her daughter was getting married. Then again, their relationship is not at a place where Lorelei feels she can come to her mom with big news like that. I am not sure how Emily reacted to her being pregnant, but I am sure there was criticism and judgement, knowing Emily.

I think communication doesn't always have to be verbal. For a less talkative guy like Luke, I think he's conveyed that he doesn't accept her apology and Lorelai obviously also senses it but the reason she's not apologizing better is because she doesn't really feel that guilty. She regrets the consequences but still believes her actions were justified. She still hates Jess and she's only even trying to patch up with Luke because Luke finally sent Jess away. Luke knows Lorelei enough and has seen her be this way with other people in the past, and he doesn't want to accept her apology until he sees some change in her behaviour, but she wants to go backwards again and pretend nothing happened

The mother of my boys had a therapist like this for years. Won't go into what effects were but let's just say it wasn't pretty and she's gone down an interesting road. The longlasting damage rhis causes to all four of us will never be undone.

Lorelai is Emily's daughter. She's not her spouse. They don't get equal blame in this for not "communicating". Lorelai cries "why have you never cared 💔" and you're worried that that hurts EMILY? What does her cry say about her childhood? Is it so easy for a child to grow past it when the uncaring-ness started so early and still continues? A parent- child relationship even after the child becomes an adult isn't as equal as a romantic couple's. You place far too much responsibility on Lorelai as the daughter to keep communicating and trying with her mother, too little on Emily who is stubborn and constantly critical.

Is it a secret or lie though if you don't have the kind of relationship where you feel you can confide even happy news with someone? Family dynamics can be very complicated. I called my godmother (my mom's best friend/my aunt) to tell her I was engaged and my godfather (my mom's brother/ my uncle) saw the ring when I saw him and he said nothing and didn't care. I don't believe someone is owed access to my life if they've slammed every door I've opened for them. This is just my opinion though. As the daughter of a single mother though I watched this show when it aired with my mom and gramma and as I've gotten older my perspective has changed on many scenes, but as much as there are times I love Emily and yes I do feel for her when she gets hurt she also never takes responsibility for it. A relationship can't be healed by only one person.

I think one of the biggest set-offs of this relationship between mother and daughter is that they are both alike in the sense of their stubbornness and unwillingness to fairly compromise or even try to find some middle ground. Both women are very different with their values and views and have a knee-jerk reaction of toxicity toward each other when they don't agree with each other. I'm not giving Emily or Lorelai excuses when it comes to some of their behavior, they've both said and done stuff without considering the other person's feelings, but I can see how this relationship could have very easily gone no-contact if Lorelai didn't have to ask her parents for Rory's tuition to Chilton. I believe it is certainly possible to have a relationship, within reason, with someone you don't always see eye-to-eye with if you are willing to do the work in said relationship.

It is hard to see your loyalty to others isn't returned. SMH.

I love Emily and Lorelai both so much. I think their biggest problem is that they are so much alike and neither of them wants to admit it. Lorelai and Emily are consistently the ones fighting for their family to stay together. Yes, Lorelai has her times where she "cuts them off" but she always comes back around because ultimately she loves them. They are both very immature when it comes to communicating but they are always able to get past their conflicts. I really can't wait to see your thoughts on A Year In the Life.

Blarg... not landing. I really wish people wouldn't expand the definition of trauma. It waters it down. Instead of Micro-traumas, call it something else... anything else... there's got to be a better term for it. Dictionary says trauma is, "1. a deeply distressing or disturbing experience. 2. Physical injury." You even read out the DSM5 definition. Leave it at that. Using the same word (even as micro-traumas) to evelope it all muddies the water and further wounds and downplays/diminishes the experiences of people who had major trauma. Please, please CREATE a different word for low-level feelings of non-safety. Students talk about not being able to eat in the classroom at school should not be using a word that is anything close to what a veteran or an abandoned child went through. It's not about competition of suffering, either... it's about clarification and understanding.

I absolutely love this. The Bad Batch has meant so much to me since the very beginning, and it mostly has to do with the fact that the characters and their interactions are written so realistically. As an ND person, I'm so grateful for the representation in this show. But another thing I love is how they don't shy away from the difficult topics. As much as I hate that Tech died, the way he sacrificed himself for the ones he loved was a beautiful, meaningful end to his story. It was also a reminder that life is precious, and we never know how much time we have with the ones we love. ❤

How about a Lorelai & Richard analysis next? I feel like 90% of the time, Lorelai gets along much2 better than Richard than Emily but when things get sour, Richard messed up even worse than Emily.

I was a HUGE fan of Gilmore Girls back in the 2000s. I loved Lorelai and Rory. I am rewatching it now. I am currently starting S02. Now I can see Lorelai is a very irresponsible and childish woman. I imagine because she got pregnant and started living as an adult so early, she missed an important part of her development and thats why she is that way. But she is not a good person. She is immature, has really big issues communicating with the people around her, is too self centered, and avoids confrontation until it ends up hurting the people around her. I think it is too bad the writers did not focus on showing her maturing process. Because I feel at the end of the series she is the same person. Her growing is not that noticeable.
